More than simply a restaurant, El Cholo is an institution and part of the living history of Los Angeles County. Founded in 1923 as the humble Sonora Cafe, we have proudly served cinema legends, such as Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando, as well as countless of the fine citizens that live and work here. We offer an uncompromising commitment to quality and closed our doors during the Second World War rather than use ingredients that didn’t meet our standards.
If you’re just in the mood for a snack, come in and try Carmen’s Original Nachos. They’ve been on the menu since 1959 and we haven’t changed a thing because they’re already perfect. Come in during the summer and you can get our famous Green Corn Tamales. Piping hot and filled with fresh corn, cheddar, corn masa and Ortega chile, one bite is all you’ll need to understand why this dish is so famous.
If you’re looking for a little more color, our Blue Corn Enchiladas will hit the spot with just the right combination of marinated chicken breast, tomatillo sauce, and sour cream. If only a classic will due, though, the Tostada Compuesta is the meal for you. With a recipe dating back to 1923, the Tostada Compuesta features savory chorizo, beans and the freshest garden vegetables we can find.
Our commitment to quality doesn’t stop with our food. We are renowned for our El Cholo Margarita, made from a closely guarded, secret recipe and featuring Cuervo 1800. Our Blue Agave Margarita, made with Cuervo Tradicional, Blue Curacao and Cointreau makes a perfect complement to the Blue Corn Enchiladas. If you’re feeling like having a bit of fun with your drink, try one of our Fruit Infused Margaritas.
Visit our Santa Monica restaurant today at 1025 Wilshire Blvd. and enjoy our Spanish-inspired architecture while you dine. You can also visit one of other locations in Downtown L.A., La Habra, Irvine or step into history at our original Los Angeles restaurant.
